Drone real estate photography is most useful when it explains something a ground-level photo cannot: how a home sits on its site, how outdoor spaces connect, or what surrounds the property. A good aerial shot list starts with those questions, rather than a request to fly as high as possible.

For agents, the practical goal is a small set of clear, purposeful images that complements the interior and exterior photography. Plan the priorities before the shoot, let the pilot assess what can be captured, and choose the finished images for the information they add.

## When does a listing benefit from aerial photography?

Consider aerial coverage when the property has outdoor features or a setting that needs context. A long driveway, several connected structures, a substantial garden or a home positioned among mature trees can be difficult to explain from a single street-level view.

That does not mean every home needs the same aerial package. For a compact property on a familiar street, a modest elevated angle may communicate more than a distant view in which the home becomes hard to identify. For a larger site, a wider composition may help viewers understand the relationship between buildings and outdoor areas.

Before ordering, finish this sentence: “A buyer should be able to understand \_\_\_ from the aerial images.” Use the answer to shape the brief.

## 1. Capture an elevated view that keeps the home recognizable

Start with a view that establishes the property while retaining visible architectural detail. The home should remain the subject. An elevated angle can show the roofline, front approach and landscaping together without turning the photograph into a generic neighborhood image.

An elevated front view from a completed HD BROS project delivered through Aryeo. The home and its landscaped approach remain the focus.

Choose the image for clarity, not altitude. If trees obscure part of a building, a different angle may be more useful than simply moving higher.

## 2. Show how outdoor spaces connect

Ask for a view that explains the relationship between the home and its outdoor features. Depending on the property, that could mean the rear garden, a patio, a detached structure or the route from the driveway to the main entrance.

Use verified feature names in the brief. Do not ask an image or caption to imply that a neighboring structure, shared area or nearby amenity belongs to the property.

A rear aerial from the same HD BROS project shows a different relationship between the building and outdoor space. These images illustrate delivered media, not current listing availability.

## 3. Add wider context only when it answers a question

A wider image can help explain the property's setting or its relationship to the surrounding streets. Keep the property easy to locate and avoid filling the listing gallery with nearly identical distant views.

If location graphics are planned, verify every label before the images are distributed. A photograph alone does not establish ownership, access rights or exact distances. Keep any marketing annotations consistent with confirmed listing information.

## 4. Separate marketing images from boundary documentation

An aerial photograph can show visible features, but it should not be treated as proof of a legal property boundary. Fences, tree lines and mowed edges do not necessarily establish the parcel limits.

If your marketing requires a boundary overlay, provide the media team with the appropriate verified reference material and confirm how the graphic will be described. Do not ask the photographer to infer parcel lines from the image. Keep measurement and ownership questions with the professionals and documents responsible for those facts.

## 5. Plan the shoot around practical constraints

Send the address, desired views and launch deadline early. The pilot needs to assess the location and operating conditions before confirming the capture plan. Do not promise a particular flight path or image to a seller before that review.

The FAA maintains [guidance for commercial drone operators](https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators), including Part 107 requirements and links to airspace information. Your media provider should handle the operational assessment; an agent's shot list describes the marketing goal, not instructions that override the pilot's decisions.

Have a ground-photography plan that still supports the launch if aerial capture must be adjusted or postponed. A complete set of useful ground-level images is more valuable than a marketing schedule that depends on one specific drone shot.

## A short briefing checklist for agents

- **Purpose:** Name the two or three questions the aerials should answer.
- **Features:** Identify the outdoor areas and structures that are confirmed parts of the property.
- **Access:** Explain the available on-site access and any coordination needed with the owner.
- **Deliverables:** Confirm whether you need still photographs, video or both, and where the files will be used.
- **Timing:** Share the intended launch date and allow room for the capture plan to change.
- **Review:** Check images, labels and captions before they enter the listing gallery.
